Tooth Decay

Tooth decay has been a common problem for people for ages. Before dentures, it was common and expected for people to lose their teeth at an early age. Tooth decay has declined among children as a group, but still effects individual children, teens, and even adults. What causes tooth decay? A sticky film of bacteria called plaque, is continuously forming on your teeth. When people eat or drink sugary or starchy substances, the bacteria in the plaque produce acids that attack teeth enamel. Eventually the enamel can break down and a cavity forms. Yikes! How can you prevent this? Cut down on the sugary intake for one! A few things you can do are brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth with floss. Also be sure to visit your dentist regularly for a professional cleaning and oral exam every 6 months to prevent tooth decay.
